Area Activities & Attractions
Thornythwaite Farm is situated in the peaceful valley of Matterdale, just above Ullswater lake in the north of the Lake District, only a few miles south of the main road (A66) between Penrith and Keswick, 15 minutes from the M6.
Ullswater lake provides a whole host of possibilities from lakeside walks linked by the regular steamer ferries to canoe and paddle board hire or just soaking up the scenery from one of the many secluded bays and inlets. And of course there is no better way to start the day than with an early morning dip as the sun pops up over the horizon!
There are numerous walks from our door to suit all abilities and energy levels and Aira Force waterfall and Gowbarrow fell, with fantastic views along the full length of Ullswater, are regular favourites. The classic loftier heights of Helvellyn and Blencathra are also close to hand with many more in between. For a real challenge the 20 mile Ullswater Way circuit around the lake makes for a long day out but it can also be tackled in more modest stages by linking up with the various stops around the lake by Ullswater Steamers.
This is cycling country with the popular Fred Witton Challenge and Tour of Britain coming past our door in recent years. Both road and mountain bikers will find plenty to keep themselves entertained. The Whinlatter mountain bike centre is about half an hour’s drive away.
Along with a host of visitor attractions, the popular areas in and around Keswick, Windermere and Grasmere are also easily reached via short drives.
