Our Ullswater Location

Thornythwaite Farm is situated in the peaceful valley of Matterdale, just above the second largest lake in the country, Ullswater, and only a few miles off the main road (A66) between Penrith and Keswick, 15 minutes from the M6. The peace and quiet is one of the special qualities of this classic Lakeland valley and there are numerous walks off the beaten track direct from our door; Aira Force waterfall and Gowbarrow fell with fantastic views along the full length of Ullswater are regular favourites. The more popular areas in and around Windermere and Keswick are also easily reached via short drives past some of the Lakes classic fells of Helvellyn and Blencathra. Ullswater lake provides a whole host of possibilities from lake side walks linked by the regular steamer ferries to canoe and paddle board hire or just soaking up the scenery from one of the many secluded bays and inlets. And of course there is no better way to start the day than with an early morning dip as the sun pops up over the horizon!

Whilst the kitchens are fully equipped for making your own meals here there is a wide range of options for eating out. Just a short stroll down the road in Dockray, the Royal Hotel serves an extensive menu and is always popular. A short drive takes you down to Glenridding down by the lake where there are various options from good café and pub food to high end dining at Inn on the Lake.
